When a rancher or a producer wants to sell the animals he has raised for slaughter outside of the area he is located he often hires a meat broker. Meat brokers specialize in selling animals to slaughterhouses. Meat brokers also sell meat from slaughterhouses to meat wholesalers, supermarket chains, smaller retailers and food manufacturing facilities. Some meat brokers specialize in selling specialty meats such as buffalo, ostrich, elk and yak. Other meat brokers specialize in selling more traditional meats such as beef, chicken, veal, lamb and pork. Some meat brokers specialize in selling meat to retailers and wholesalers. Other meat brokers specialize in selling meat to frozen food manufacturers, canned food makers and other prepared food manufacturers. Some meat brokers may specialize in selling just one kind of meat such as a chicken broker or a beef broker.
